Why study sociology? Sociology is a well established academic discipline where you encounter new ways of thinking about issues you normally take for granted. It is a challenging, highly rewarding and exciting subject to study where you gain a critical understanding of the social relationships and social processes that structure the world around you. Sociology is concerned with understanding and explaining how societies and communities operate, including the influence of power, social movements, interpersonal relationships, health and wellbeing, and constructions of identity and identity politics. Sociological knowledge and research skills are used and valued in a wide variety of occupations, such as journalism, business and research, civil service and government, social work, education, community development and human resources, to name but a few.
