What English Courses you can apply?

One-to-One Courses

One tutor, one student. One-to-One tuition is the most effective and rapid method for a student to improve their command of English language, spoken and written. From the start of the programme the teacher works with the student to design an individual plan which meets the student’s needs.

With our One-to-One courses you choose the number of lessons and the areas you would like to work on. Lessons can be designed to meet your specific language requirements. Students can choose to study General English or one of the specialist subject areas described below.

Business English

These lessons cover a wide range of business language skills, including the language of presentations, seminars,conferences and meetings, and describing tables and graphs. They also focus on speaking naturally in social situations, making appointments, corresponding by email and understanding commercial documents.

English for Medical Purposes

These lessons are designed to develop the communication skills and specialist medical English of doctors,nurses, dentists, healthcare assistants and carers working across a range of disciplines. They are also intended for those studying towards a career in the medical field.

Exam Preparation

These lessons involve an in-depth focus on the different parts of the exam the student is preparing to take, for example IELTS, the Cambridge ESOL (KET, PET, FCE, CAE &CPE), TOEFL, TOEIC etc. In these sessions, the student receives targeted practice in the strategies needed to approach the different parts of the exam and tuition in the language and organisational skills required for the writing tasks.

Legal English

These lessons are intended for those already working in the legal profession and for those who have studied or are studying law. They focus on enabling students to understand legal documents written in English and on helping them to acquire the very specific language skills required to communicate well with other individuals in this area.

English for the Oil and Gas Industry

These lessons are taught through content specifically related to the oil and gas industry, and are suitable for anyone working within these fields. Emphasis is placed on improving and learning relevant technical vocabulary.

English for Engineering

These lessons are suitable for engineers and engineering technicians from any field. Special emphasis is placed on practising the language skills and relevant vocabulary across a wide range of technical contexts, such as for technical drawings, dimensions, causes and effects, and explaining technical problems.

Business English

This course is ideal for students wishing to combine General English group lessons with a Business English elective modules course that focuses on communication, for people who are working in any area of business and for those studying a business-related subject.

IELTS Exam Preparation

The Intensive IELTS course is a four-week course that will prepare you to take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. It focuses on strategies and techniques for success in the four parts of the exam: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

It is likely that you will have to take the IELTS exam if you want to work or study in an English-speaking environment. IELTS is an international standardised test of English language ability, trusted by universities, immigration departments, government agencies, professional bodies and multinational companies. Over 1.5 million people take it annually.

The course is an intensive programme, with significant amounts of homework given everyday. It focuses exclusively on exam preparation, so it is not suitable for you if you want to improve the overall level of your English.

General English Plus One-to-One

These courses are ideal for students wishing to combine group lessons with One-to-One tuition in order to maximise their language learning. Your timetable depends on the number of one-to-one lessons.

Academic English (Minimum Level: Intermediate)

This module focuses on how to plan,structure and produce written pieces of academic work, using appropriate grammar structures and vocabulary. It also aims to enable students to engage with written academic material and to develop the specific oral communication skills required in academic fields.

Pre-IELTS (Minimum Level: Pre-Intermediate)

This module is intended for students who wish to take the IELTS exam and who need a band score of between 4.5–5.5. It focuses intensively on reading, listening and speaking strategies for the IELTS exam and covers the vocabulary and grammar structures that students require to be successful in IELTS writing.

Business English (Miniumum Level: Intermediate)

This module expands students’ knowledge of business terms and vocabulary, and provides students with the opportunity to practice essential business skills, such as delivering presentations and negotiating.

General English

This course combines the morning ‘accuracy’  and 6 hours of the afternoon ‘fluency’  programmes with a focus on Social English & intensive skills practice with authentic texts adapted for English Language Learners. You can expect to practice speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar and pronunciation in a communicative environment.

A placement test is given on arrival to assess level and at the end of each language level, a progress test is taken and must be passed before entry to the next level. Homework is given regularly to encourage self-study.

Intensive General English

This whole day course combines the morning ‘accuracy’ and the afternoon ‘fluency’ programmes with a focus on Social English & intensive skills practice with authentic texts adapted for English Language Learners. You can expect to practise speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar and pronunciation in a communicative environment. A placement test is given on arrival to assess your level, and at the end of each language level a progress test is taken and must be passed before entry to the next level. Homework is given regularly to encourage self-study.

 

The Information you need to know

UK Weather

The weather in Britain is very changeable, so whatever time of year you are here it is sensible to bring a variety of clothes.

In the winter months, from December to February, it is very cold so you should bring warm clothes, including a hat and scarf. Between March and May, average temperatures are 10 to 15˚C and there might be rain. From June to August, temperatures are usually around 17 to 21˚C, though there may be some days where they exceed 30˚C. As well as your summer wardrobe, you may need some light outerwear during these months. In autumn, from September to November, the weather is likely to be similar to March and April.

Insurance for English Students

We strongly advise students to organise their own travel and medical insurance before they arrive in London. If you are an EEA National, you can apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) this allows you get state healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes free. It will cover you for treatment that is needed to allow you to continue your stay until your planned return.

Visa for English Students

Before you arrive in UK, there are some options to consider. If you are a European Economic Area (EEA) national, you will not require a visa to study in the UK. However if you do require a visa, to apply for one you will need to show:

  •     you have enrolled on a course for a minimum of 15 hours a week
  •     a letter from the College to confirm that you have booked a place
  •     details of your accommodation in UK
  •     you have enough money to pay for your studies and to support yourself while you are here

If you are not clear about any of the visa requirements for your country then you can speak to your local British embassy or you can also check though the UK Visa website (www.ukvisas.gov.uk) for more information.

If your course is less then 12 months you need to apply Student Visitor visa

Eligibility for Student Visitor Visa

You must prove that you:

  •     are 18 or over
  •     have been offered a place on a course in the UK at an accepted place of study
  •     have enough money to support yourself without working or help from public funds, or that relatives and friends can support and    house you
  • can pay for your return or onward journey

How long you can stay

With Student Visitor Visa you can stay in the UK for:

  •     6 months - for any short course including English language courses
  •     11 months - an extended visa for English language courses only

Documents you must provide

When you apply you’ll need to provide:

  •  a current passport or other valid travel identification
  •  2 passport size colour photographs
  •  evidence that you can support yourself during your trip, eg bank statements or payslips for the last 6 months
  •  details of where you intend to stay and your travel plans - you shouldn’t pay for accommodation or travel until you get your visa
  •  your tuberculosis (TB) test results if you’re from a country where you have to take the test
  •  You’ll need to have a blank page in your passport on which to put the visa.
  •  You’ll need to provide a certified translation of any documents that aren’t in English or Welsh.

  •  Documents about your course

You must provide proof of:

  • the course you’re studying, eg a letter of acceptance from the educational institution - on official headed paper, stating the course’s name, duration and cost (including accommodation)
  • your previous study, eg academic certificates, academic references, academic transcripts
  • any English language ability or qualifications, eg test certificates, award certificates for degrees taught in English
